Article 4 of the Nationality Act (Japan)
Non-Japanese nationals can acquire Japanese nationality through naturalization. To undergo naturalization, they must obtain permission from the Minister of Justice.
Main Conditions for Naturalization Application
- Continuing to Have a Residence in Japan for Five or More Years
- Being 18 Years or Older and Legally Competent According to the Laws of One’s Home Country
- Good Moral Character
- Ability to Support Oneself or Be Supported by the Assets or Skills of One’s Spouse or Other Relatives
- Not Having a Nationality or Losing One’s Previous Nationality Upon Acquiring Japanese Nationality
- Not Attempting to Overthrow the Japanese Constitution or the Government Established Under It by Violence, or Supporting or Belonging to a Political Party or Organization That Advocates Such Actions
- Having Sufficient Japanese Language Skills (Speaking, Reading, and Writing) to Live Daily Life Without Difficulty and Being Integrated into Japanese Society
